TROY - Troy University will welcome back alumni and friends Nov. 11-13 as the University celebrates Homecoming under the theme of "For the Love of TROY."
This year's Homecoming will be particularly special because it will kick off the celebration of the University's 125th birthday, according to Faith Ward, director of alumni affairs. "We are very excited about Troy University's 125 years of service, and I can't think of a better time to kick off that celebration than at Homecoming," Ward said. "TROY has evolved and grown significantly since its founding in 1887, and we invite all alumni and friends to come join us as we begin our journey toward this historic milestone in the life of our University."
Homecoming activities will swing into high gear on Nov. 11, as TROY softball alumni compete in a Home Run Derby at the University's Softball Complex beginning at 5 p.m.
A Homecoming Pep Rally will be held on the Bibb Graves Quad at 5:45 p.m. The pep rally will include comments from Trojan Head Coach Larry Blakeney and members of the team, performances by the Sound of the South and the Trojan cheerleaders and a fireworks display.
Two alumni reunions are also scheduled for Nov. 11. The World War II-era alumni reunion is set for 5 p.m. and a reunion for Vietnam War-era alumni will begin at 7 p.m. Both events will take place in the Stadium Club.
In addition, Track and Field alumni have events planned during the weekend to pay tribute to John H. "Doc" Anderson, who served as head track coach and athletic trainer from 1967-1979. During his tenure, the TROY track team produced numerous team and individual championships in the Gulf South Conference and nearly 30 All-Americans at either the N.A.I.A. or NCAA Division II levels. Anderson, who earned a master's degree in physical education from TROY in 1968, is currently clinical director of the University's athletic training program.
The "Doc" Reunion events include a mixer at 6 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Troy Hampton Inn, tailgating activities at the track at 11 a.m. on Nov. 12 and a reception and banquet in the Hawkins Hall Lobby beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 12. The Homecoming Court will be introduced during pre-game activities beginning at 2 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff for the game against North Texas is set for 2:30 p.m.
During halftime, the Homecoming queen will be crowned and the winners of the 2011 Alumni of the Year will be honored. Halftime festivities will also include performances by the Sound of the South marching band and the Alumni Band. Alumni cheerleaders will join current TROY cheerleading squads on the sidelines throughout the game.
Later that evening, the Alpha Phi Alpha Greek Step Show will take place in the Claudia Crosby Theater beginning at 7 p.m. Also, the TROY volleyball team will take on Florida Atlantic in Trojan Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
