Troy University's Merit Badge University set for Oct. 27

TROY – Boy Scouts from around the state and region will get a chance to sample the college environment during Troy University’s Merit Badge University on Oct. 27.

In its third year, MBU will bring together about 300 Scouts and their leaders to concentrate on a day of completing a merit badge. Most of the 25 badges offered at TROY are taught by faculty members or professional staff at the University, or instructed by experts in the field.

The last two events have drawn Scouts from across Alabama, as well as those from Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.

“This is an opportunity for TROY to showcase itself not only to the Scouts in southeast Alabama, but to any Scouts who wish to come,” said Herb Reeves, Dean of Student Services, who helps coordinate the event. “Our University is pleased to partner with the Alabama Florida Council to introduce a ‘world of opportunities’ to Scouts.”

The merit badge offerings provided reflect many of the opportunities available at the University, ranging from communication to business to health care to the arts and sciences, said Clif Lusk, a University Relations Coordinator who serves as Dean of Merit Badge University and is an Alabama Florida Council vice president.

“Our goal is to provide Scouts a taste of what it’s like to go to college. Each of TROY’s colleges are represented by merit badge offerings, and the College of Education’s Hawkins Hall serves as the home base for the event,” Lusk said. Among the badges offered are three required for the Eagle Scout rank, Scouting’s highest: First Aid, taught in the College of Health and Human Services, Personal Management, taught in the Sorrell College of Business, and Citizenship in the World, taught through the College of Arts and Sciences. Scouts taking the Citizenship in the World class also get exposed to another unique side of TROY, involvement by international students.

“TROY is known as Alabama’s ‘international university,’ and to be able to involve our international students with the Scouts adds to the experience,” Lusk said.
