TROY – Troy University will celebrate homecoming on Oct. 5 under the theme “TROY Saves the Day: A Hero’s Homecoming.”
Alumni Director Faith Ward is extending the invitation to all alumni and friends of the University to return for Homecoming activities.
“Our traditional homecoming activities provide alumni the opportunity to renew old friendships and see the many changes that are taking place on campus,” Ward said. “I am also excited that, through the efforts of our Student Government Association, TROY students will be taking part in service projects throughout the week, representing the true definition of heroism by putting the needs of others first.”
TROY students will kick off the week’s activities on Saturday, Sept. 28 with a Homecoming Service Day. Nearly 450 students will travel to sites in and around the city of Troy to tackle service projects, according to Trip Hubbard, SGA vice president of campus activities. In addition, the SGA will be collecting canned goods throughout the week to benefit local food banks.
Students also will hold a Tailgate for Troops event from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4 on Tailgate Terrace. Student organizations will prepare their favorite tailgating dish and may purchase a $5 wristband to sample all of the food. Money raised from the event will be used to provide the local veterans home with pillows, bedding and hygiene products.
In addition, student organizations will be involved throughout the week in various competitions such as a dance contest and skit night.
A homecoming pep rally will be held on Friday, Oct. 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the Bibb Graves Quad. Fireworks will follow. All alumni and friends are welcome.
A reunion will be held at 5 p.m. on Oct. 4 for World War II-era alumni in the Stadium Club, located on the fourth floor of the R. Douglas Hawkins Press Box Tower.
Activities will get under way on Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. with the annual Homecoming Parade, presented by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, in downtown Troy. Trojan Walk is set for 9:45 a.m. beginning at Sartain Hall and ending at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The alumni tailgate event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Alumni House on the corner of Highland Avenue and George Wallace Drive. In addition, the Clipson Reunion and the 45th reunion of the 1968 National Championship team will take place on the grounds of the Alumni House, beginning at 10 a.m. Pre-game festivities are set to begin at 11:30 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium, including the introduction of the Homecoming Court. Kickoff for the game between the Trojans and South Alabama is set for noon.
During halftime of the game, the University will recognize four Alumni of the Year award recipients and the Homecoming Queen will be crowned. The halftime show will also feature performances by the Sound of the South and the Alumni Band.
