City of Montgomery’s Anita Archie urges Troy University graduates to be themselves

MONTGOMERY - Anita Archie, the executive assistant to the Mayor of Montgomery, urged Troy University graduates in Montgomery on Monday to be honest and true to themselves as they pursue success after graduation.

“Be true to yourself and the people in your life,” Archie said. “Believe in yourself.”

Archie delivered the keynote address to graduates during the fall commencement ceremony for the Montgomery Campus on Monday, Dec. 16, at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts. Some 182 students received degrees this fall at the Montgomery Campus.

Archie told graduates to be themselves and not try to emulate others as they begin their careers.

“Do ‘you,’ do not try to be someone else,” Archie said. “You can only be the best that you can be, not anybody else. If you try to be someone else, then what you are going to become is very uncomfortable.”

When facing challenges and difficulties, Archie said graduates should try and keep a positive attitude in order to inspire others.

“You may be down, but be up,” she said. “Sometimes you may be a blessing for someone that is looking for you to be positive and have a smile on your face.”

As executive assistant to Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, Archie supervises the planning and risk management departments.

She is also responsible for human resources, special project management and mayor-city council relations. Archie previously served as the senior vice president of intergovernmental affairs and advocacy and legal advisor at the Business Council of Alabama.
