Five named Chancellor's Fellows at Troy University

TROY - Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr., has announced the selection of five faculty members to participate in the 2014 Chancellor's Fellows Program.

Selected were: Dr. Lynn Boyd, Assistant Professor of Counseling on the Montgomery Campus Dr. Anthony W. Dixon, Assistant Professor of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management on the Troy Campus; Dr. Jean Michael Martinez, Assistant Professor of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management on the Phenix City Campus; Dr. James N. Ortego II, Associate Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Studies on the Dothan Campus; and Dr. Cozetta D. Shannon, Assistant Professor in the College of Education on the Montgomery Campus.

The program is directed by Dr. John Kline, distinguished professor of leadership and director of TROY's Institute for Leadership Development. Kline, a former university provost and senior executive in the federal government, is uniquely qualified to direct the program — a program Chancellor Hawkins believes will "help selected faculty and staff members move into positions of responsibility, prepared for the task of leading Troy University in the years ahead."

The fellows were nominated by TROY deans, directors or vice chancellors and selected by the Chancellor to participate in the program. Graduates of the program include: Dr. Lance Tatum, Vice Chancellor of Global Campus; Buddy Starling, Dean of Enrollment Management; Sohail Agboatwala, Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Services; Herbert Reeves, Dean of Student Services; Dr. Robin Bynum, Associate Dean of the College of Education; Marcus Paramore, Director of Government Relations; Dr. Dianne Barron, Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School; and Dr. Dave White, Vice Chancellor of TROY's Phenix City Campus.

"The Chancellor's Faculty and Staff Fellowship Program enables qualified full-time faculty or staff to develop increased knowledge and understanding of the programs and operations of Troy University; furthermore, the fellows receive executive leadership, management, and communication skills training," said Dr. Kline. "Participants are selected based on their leadership potential and service to the University."

The experience spans the spring and summer academic semesters during which the Fellows will have the opportunity to benefit from briefings and meetings with senior University officials and take part in field trips and visits to meet with state education officials, business leaders and state government officials, according to Kline.

During their tenure, Fellows undertake and complete a study of significance and importance to the University. The Fellows have already met twice with Dr. Hawkins and have begun their project of "Cultivating a Culture of Study Abroad at Troy University."


Chancellor's Fellows Bios

- Lynn Boyd earned her bachelor's degree in English (1994) and a Master of Education in Counseling and Development (1997) from Auburn University at Montgomery. She was later awarded an African-American Fellowship for the University of Alabama and completed her Ph.D. in Counselor Education in 2007. She began her employment with Troy University in 1998 and has worked as the Coordinator of Veterans Affairs & Scholarships, the Assistant Financial Aid Director, and the Interim Financial Aid Director. She is a recent graduate of the Delta Leadership Institute Executive Academy, a year-long leadership development program for regional leaders that prepares them to collaborate and address the most-pressing issues of the Delta region.

In 2008, she was appointed by former Gov. Bob Riley to the Black Belt Action Committee and served as Chair of the Families Committee until 2011. She is the immediate Past-President of the Alabama Mental Health Counselors Association and serves on the boards of other professional counseling associations. She has presented her research at regional and national conferences about issues related to group counseling, supervision, and teaching. Boyd and her husband, Daniel, have a son, Jordan.

- Anthony W. Dixon joined Troy University in 2010 as an Assistant Professor of Sport and Tourism Management at the Troy Campus where he currently serves as the Interim Director of the School of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management. In 2009, he earned his doctoral degree from Clemson University in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management with an emphasis in sport, tourism, and economic development. He earned his Master of Business Administration from East Carolina University with an emphasis in Strategic Management and Marketing (2002) and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance (1999) from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Dr. Dixon serves on the editorial board for “Event Management: An International Journal and the Journal of Applied Sport Management.” Outside of academia, Dr. Dixon has been a consultant for professional and intercollegiate athletic organizations, as well as state and local government agencies. He also serves as Co-Director of Troy University's HSTM's Charity Golf Tournament and Children's Health Field Day. Dr. Dixon and his wife, Harriet, have four children -- Andrew, Beth, Turner and Graham.

- Jean Michael Martinez is an Assistant Professor of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management at Troy University's Phenix City campus where he also serves as the Global Campus Coordinator for the School of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management. He first joined Troy University in 2009, teaching at the Global Campus location in Columbus, Ga., before serving for three years on the Troy Campus.

Martinez earned both a bachelor's (Sport Administration, 2001) and master's degree (Public Relations, 2003) from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Ph.D. (Human Performance, 2009, emphasis in Leisure and Sport Management) from Middle Tennessee State University. Prior to earning his doctoral degree, Martinez worked as a marketing and media relations practitioner for an intercollegiate athletics department, as well as a non-profit organization. He also served as editor of the “Journal of Sport Administration and Supervision.” More recently, Martinez was named to the 2013-14 Leadership Class for the Phenix City/Russell County Chamber of Commerce and currently serves as the President-Elect of the Southern Sport Management Association. He lives just outside of Phenix City with his wife Kim and his three children -- Kaylee, Emma and Mikey.

- James N. Ortego II is an Associate Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Troy University's Dothan campus where he also serves as the Associate Chair of English. He earned a bachelor's degree (English Literature and Composition, 1993) and a master's degree (British and American Literature, 1996) from the University of New Orleans. He also earned a Ph.D. (Renaissance and Medieval Studies, 2004) from the University of Louisiana – Lafayette.

Since beginning his career with Troy University in 2005, Ortego has served on the judiciary panel for the “Yes We Can! Dothan - Speak Out Essay and Speech Contest,” as well as the “Excellence in Student Literary Magazines” contest sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). More recently, he served on the editorial board of the academic journal Fifteenth-Century Studies and as an editorial reviewer for various forth-coming publications by Pearson Publishers and Broadview Press. He has also served on the Faculty Support Group for Penguin Publishers, and currently, is a member of the Executive Advisory Board for the Wiregrass Writing Project. He presently lives in Dothan with his wife and their four children.

- Cozetta D. Shannon is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education, as well as the Program Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling graduate program at Troy University's Montgomery Campus. Dr. Shannon completed her bachelor's degree at Southern University (2002, Baton Rouge) and her master's degree at the University of Memphis (2004). She later earned her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counselor Education from Michigan State University (2009).

Dr. Shannon's vocational experiences include working as a contract mental health counselor, an assistive technology trainer and a vocational expert for the Social Security Administration. Her research has examined attitudes toward persons with disabilities, best practices related to multicultural education and retention issues among students and professionals within the field of Rehabilitation Counseling. She also has a strong interest in the impact of mentoring on the levels of job satisfaction and motivation among rehabilitation professionals and students. She is a member of various professional organizations and believes in the power of networking and collaborating to reach common goals. Dr. Shannon currently resides in Montgomery.
