History lecture series focuses on Southern identity

TROY - Troy University's annual McPherson-Mitchell Lecture in Southern History will be presented by Dr. James C. Cobb. The presentation is entitled "The South is Where You Find It: Contours of Southern Identity, Old and New."

Professor Cobb is a B. Phinizy Spalding Professor at the University of Georgia. He is a former president of the Southern Historical Association and has written widely on the interaction between economy, society, and culture in the American South. Dr. Cobb has authored four books, his most recent work, "The South and America Since World War II," was published by Oxford University Press in 2010.

"We are pleased to host Dr. Cobb and hear his perspective of the changing sense of how Southerners define themselves and the region," said Timothy Buckner, assistant professor of history.

The lecture is at 5 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Claudia Crosby Theatre on the Troy Campus and is presented by the Department of History and Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. It is free and open to the public.
