TROY - Dr. Amy Spurlock, Doctor of Nursing Practice coordinator and professor in the School of Nursing at Troy University, has been awarded the Wallace D. Malone, Jr. Distinguished Faculty Award.
Dr. Spurlock, who joined the TROY faculty in 2003, was presented the award by Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, and Dr. Earl Ingram, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, during the University's annual Faculty/Staff Convocation on Aug. 7, at the Troy Campus.
The award consists of a $1,000 cash prize and a medallion to be worn with academic regalia. The award is made possible through a $100,000 endowment by the SouthTrust Corporation. Wallace Malone, former chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of SouthTrust, served as a TROY trustee from 1975-1995.
"I was humbled and grateful to receive such a prestigious honor," Dr. Spurlock said. "No one at TROY works alone, so honoring me with this award also honored my colleagues in the School of Nursing, the Graduate School, and the College of Health and Human Services."
Dr. Spurlock has had her research published in numerous scholarly and professional journals, including "Policy, Politics and Nursing Practice," "Reflections on Nursing Leadership," "The Alabama Nurse," "Concepts of the Nursing Profession," "The Journal of Instructional Pedagogies," and "The Alabama State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Journal."
She has presented at numerous conferences such as the American Public Health Association Conference, the National Conference on Tobacco or Health, the American Nurses Association Quadrennial Policy Conference, the National Emergency Management Summit, the Southern Nursing Research Society, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Region 8 Conference, among others.
Dr. Spurlock is a Registered Nurse and is a member of the American Nurses Association, the Southern Nursing Research Society and the American Public Health Association.
Prior to joining the Troy University faculty, Dr. Spurlock served as a clinical instructor at the University of Kentucky. She also has previously served as a research assistant at the University of Kentucky, an instructor at Boise State University and an instructor at South Dakota State University.
Dr. Spurlock holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from James Madison University and a Master of Science in nursing with an emphasis in community health from the University of Virginia. She earned her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Spurlock and her husband, Dr. Jeff Spurlock, who is director of the University's Hall School of Journalism and Communication, reside in Troy.
