TROY - Gov. Robert Bentley has appointed Andalusia Mayor Earl Johnson to a 12-year term on the Troy University Board of Trustees.

Johnson's appointment must be confirmed by the Alabama Senate, but the governor's appointment was effective Sept. 18.

"Mayor Earl Johnson has been the model TROY alumnus, serving as a member of our Foundation Board of Directors, chairman of our Sports Hall of Fame Board of Advisors, and a driving force behind the creation of our planned giving society. His family's generosity led to the complete redesign and upgrade of our main Quad on the Troy Campus. His leadership and expertise in matters of policy will enhance an already strong Board of Trustees," said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor.

A 1970 TROY graduate in economics and business administration, Johnson went on to attend Cumberland School of Law and Samford University, completing his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1974. He was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in Nov. 1974 and has practiced law in Andalusia since that time.

In his third term as Andalusia's mayor, Johnson was first elected in 2000, and was re-elected in 2008 and 2012. He is a past assistant district attorney for Covington County. He is a founding director of First National Bank of Andalusia.

He is a member of the American Bar Association, and is a former bar commissioner for the 22nd Judicial Circuit of the Alabama Bar Association. His other current memberships include serving on the Covington County Bar Association, the Andalusia Rotary Club, where he is a past president and Paul Harris Fellow and is a board member of the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the boards of the Covington County Economic Development Commission and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

At TROY, Johnson has been involved in many areas of University life. He has served as the general counsel to the Troy University National Alumni Association Board of Directors, and is a member of the Troy University Foundation Board of Directors. He was the Founding President of the TROY Shield Society and is co-chairman of the Troy University Planned Giving Council. Awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2008, Johnson played an integral role in raising funds necessary for TROY's entry into NCAA Division I.

"I am honored by this appointment to the Troy University Board of Trustees. Being a 1970 graduate of Troy University, along with other members of my family being graduates of the University, it has long been a dream of mine to serve on this important board and I look forward to working with the talented members of the Board of Trustees, as well as the outstanding administration, leadership and faculty of the University to make TROY the best it can be," Johnson said.
