TROY - Troy University will celebrate Homecoming Oct. 17 with the theme "Sound of the Trojan Spirit."
Alumni Director Faith Ward is extending the invitation to all alumni and friends of the University to return for Homecoming activities.
"Homecoming is always a special time for the University as so many alumni visit, share their memories and marvel at the changes that have occurred on campus," Ward said. "This year's theme not only celebrates the Trojan Spirit, but also celebrates the 50th anniversary of our iconic marching band, The Sound of the South, and the important role that music has always played at TROY."
Students will kick off a week of activities with a service day on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the Pike Pioneer Museum. Monday, Oct. 12, will feature the "Who's Got Sound?" event at 6 p.m. at Janice Hawkins Park Amphitheatre.
The annual blood drive will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Trojan Center ballrooms from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by Skit Night at 8 p.m. in Trojan Arena.
Thursday, Oct. 15, will feature Dance Night at 7:30 p.m. in Trojan Arena, followed by Tailgate for Troops on the Trojan Arena patio, which raises proceeds to support local veterans.
Events on Friday, Oct. 16, will include the memorial service in memory of longtime Board of Trustees member Dr. Doug Hawkins, in the Claudia Crosby Theater at 3 p.m., followed by a World War II Era Alumni Reunion at the Stadium Club. A homecoming pep rally will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the Bibb Graves Quad. Everyone is welcome to attend and cheer the Trojans on.
Following the pep rally, the University Activities Council will host a concert at Trojan Arena at 7 p.m. The performing artist will be Wale, and tickets are $20 for students and $40 for the public.
On Friday, the festivities will continue with a Homecoming Party in downtown Troy, featuring The Park Band at 6 p.m. For more information, contact the City of Troy at (334) 674-2468.
The Homecoming festivities will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 17, with the Nick Costes Homecoming 5K in downtown Troy starting at 8:30 a.m. To participate, contact email@example.com. The Homecoming Appreciation Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. in downtown Troy. The Trojan Walk will take place at 11:45 a.m. beginning at the corner of George Wallace Drive and University Avenue. All alumni, friends, and students are welcome to attend.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., both a book signing and the alumni tailgate will occur. The book signing will be hosted at the Barnes and Noble bookstore located in Trojan Center and will feature the author of "Fireborn" D. M. Raver. The Alumni tailgate will be held at the Alumni House on the corner of Highland Avenue and George C. Wallace Drive. The Sorrell College of Business will hold an open house at Bibb Graves Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Pre-game activities and festivities will begin at 2 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium, where the presentation and introduction of the homecoming court will be made. Kickoff for the Trojans and Idaho Vandals football game will be at 2:30 p.m.
During halftime, the University will recognize the Alumni of the Year recipients and crown the Homecoming Queen. The halftime show will also feature a performance by the Sound of the South.
At 7 p.m., the Alumni Scholarship Ball will take place in the Trojan Center ballrooms. Tickets are $25, and proceeds will go to the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Tickets may be purchased at the Alumni House. The Alpha Phi Alpha Step Show will also take place at 7 p.m. in Crosby Theatre.
