Dr. Allen Dennis
Professor of History
Dr. Allen Dennis is the former associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and is a professor of history. He joined the University in 1998 from Delta State University, where he had served as the chairman of the history department since 1993 and as a member of the history faculty since 1968.
He earned both a doctorate and a master’s degree from Mississippi State University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Tenneesee Wesleyan College. Dennis’ academic concentrations are in the Civil War, the Old South, U.S. Federal and Middle Period (1789-1850), colonial America, European History (1815-1914) and American political theory.
He has served a minister of two Church of Christ congregations and as pastor of Pace ( Miss.) Baptist Church. He has also been sports editor and feature writer at the Daily Post-Athenian and sports editor of the Athens ( Tenn.) Press.
In addition to his duties at TROY, Dennis presents a one-man show as Abraham Lincoln and as country music legend Jimmie Rodgers. Prior to his move to Alabama, Dennis was active in the Mississippi Humanities Council, receiving its 25-year award following his retirement from Delta State.
