TROY – Troy University's John M. Long School of Music will present its annual Choral Showcase Concert on Tuesday, March 27 at First Baptist Church in Troy.

Admission to the performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public, and features the Collegiate Singers, Concert Choral and frequency. The concert is directed by Director of University Choirs Dr. Diane Orlofsky and Laura Aaron Mixon, a lecturer of choral music and TROY alumna.

Among the highlights of the concert will be the premier of two works, and the dedication of one piece to a long-time high school Spanish teacher.

"Laura Mixon and I enjoy selecting a diverse program of choral literature for the showcase concert and this evening is no exception," said Dr. Orlofsky. "It is a rare treat for an audience when they are able to hear selections by Copeland, Hindemith, Whitacre; contemporary favorites like Randall Stroope, Giselle Wyers and Eric Barnum, unique settings of traditional pieces, and premiers all in the same night."

Premiering at the concert will be pieces by Long School faculty member Dr. Traci Mendel and Music Industry graduate student Xavier Roberson. In recognition of her 35 years of teaching Spanish to young people, "Él Amor de mi Alma" will be dedicated to Pamela Merkel, currently in her 28th year of teaching at Troy's Charles Henderson High School.

TROY Theatre to present musical "Band Geeks" starting March 29

TROY—Troy University's Department of Theatre and Dance will present a fun-filled tribute to marching bands and misfits everywhere with the musical "Band Geeks!" premiering March 29 at the Troy Campus.

The story follows the misadventures of the Belleview High Marching Beavers. With just a few members and dwindling funds, the band is close to extinction. When a troubled athlete is relegated to their ranks, tuba-playing band captain Elliott and his best friend Laura must find a way to unite the band, embrace their inner geek and save the Marching Beavers.

Performances are set for the Claudia Crosby Theatre on the Troy Campus March 29, 30, and 31, at 7:30 p.m. The show goes on the road to perform at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts at the Montgomery Campus on April 20, at 7 p.m. and at the historic Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham on May 11 and 12 at 7:30pm.

Tickets for the Troy Campus performances can be purchased online at www.troytheatre.org or by calling the box office at 334-808-5477. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for students with a valid Troy ID.

Tickers for the Montgomery Campus performance range in price from $15 to $25 and can be purchased by calling the Davis Theatre office at (334) 241-9567. A limited number of tickets for this performance are being offered at the special rate of "buy one, get one free."

Tickets for the Birmingham performances can be purchased at http://www.virginiasamfordtheatre.org/ or by calling the box office at (205) 251-1206.

"Band Geeks!" features music by Mark Allen, Gaby Alter and Troy University alumnus Tommy Newman, and lyrics by Alter and Newman. The book is by Newman and Gordon Greenberg, who directed the original production for Goodspeed Musicals, based on a concept by Newman.

"'Band Geeks!' is a tribute to marching bands everywhere and to all of the music educators who have touched my life," Newman said. "My involvement with the theatre and music programs at TROY inspired me to be the artist I am today, and I am so grateful to be able to share that with this University at this monumental celebration!"

The performances of "Band Geeks!" are being presented as part of TROY's yearlong 125th Birthday Celebration.

"We are excited that TROY alum and 'Band Geeks!' creator Tommy Newman is on campus and helping to develop and shape this production which will be a major part of the TROY 125th Birthday Celebration," said Adena Moree, Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. "I look forward to sharing this wonderful musical theatre production with the state of Alabama as "Band Geeks!" travels to both Montgomery and Birmingham for performances after the run in Troy."

The production is under the direction of Assistant Professor Roy Hudson, Head of Musical Theatre and Theatre Education and the 2009 Alabama Teacher of the Year. Musical direction is by Newman and choreography is by Colin Cahill.

Spring Alumni Reunion set for March 31 at Troy University

TROY -- A St. Patrick's Day-themed parade and an alumni luncheon are among the highlights for March 31, as Troy University celebrates its annual spring alumni reunion.

Alumni Affairs Director Faith Ward said the annual event provides alumni with the opportunity to reconnect with former classmates, as well as the University.

"Spring Reunion weekend is an important event in the life of Troy University," Ward said. "We hope that all members of the TROY family will take advantage of this opportunity to reunite and reconnect with former classmates and friends, take part in the fun activities we have planned and witness first-hand the tremendous growth that is taking place on campus."

A St. Patrick's Day-themed parade will take place at noon on University Avenue, followed by a fish fry on the grounds of the University's Alumni House. Tickets for the fish fry are $10 per person and are available by contacting the Alumni Office at 334-670-3318.

An Alumni Leadership Luncheon will be held in the Stadium Club, located on the fourth floor of the Douglas Hawkins Press Box tower at Veterans Memorial Stadium, beginning at 1 p.m. Chapter awards will be presented during the luncheon, along with special recognition of Silver and Golden Trojans and Lifetime Members of the University's Alumni Association. Tickets for the luncheon are $25. For additional information, contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at 334-670-3318.

The T-Day spring football scrimmage will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. The scrimmage is free and open to the public.
This year's event will also take on the flavor of the University's yearlong 125th birthday celebration with a performance of the musical "Band Geeks," written by TROY alumnus Tommy Newman beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater. The play is about a small high school marching band with dwindling funds that enters into a festival against much larger bands in hopes of saving their school's music program.

Newman, a 2003 music education graduate, is serving as TROY's artist-in-residence. In addition to performances on March 29, 30 and 31 on the Troy Campus, the play also will be presented at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts on the Montgomery Campus on April 20 and at the Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham on May 12 and 13. Dates for other performances are expected to be announced soon.

For tickets or additional information about "Band Geek" performances, contact 334-808-6477 or visit the TROY website at www.troy.edu.
