Rosa Parks Museum to host Women's History Month lecture

MONTGOMERY—To mark Women's History Month, Troy University's Rosa Parks Museum will host a lecture on the oral slave narratives of African American women on Thursday, March 22, at 6 p.m.

The event will be held inside the museum auditorium, and admission is free and open to the public.

Presented by Dr. DoVeanna S. Fulton Minor, "Speaking Lives, Authoring Texts: African American Women's Oral Slave Narratives" will address the significance of African American women's oral slave narratives and oral tradition in African American culture.

She will also highlight the three slave narratives that are featured in her book, "Speaking Lives, Authoring Texts: Three African American Women's Oral Slave Narratives" (SUNY Press 2006), including the stories of "Louisa Picquet, the Octoroon: A Tale of Southern Slave Life" (1861), "The Story of Mattie J. Scott Hubbard

TROY – A Troy University fraternity member will lead the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference, one of four regional voluntary associations of fraternity governing councils in North America.

Scott Hubbard, a sophomore biomedical science major from Wetumpka and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, was elected at the Conference's spring meeting.

"I first heard of this position when I was a freshman here at Troy and I knew right then and there that was a goal I was going to work towards and achieve, and I feel really blessed and honored," he said. "I was so overwhelmed when they called my name out as the newly elected president and I just saw everything I had worked really hard for all flash before me and become a reality. It was the best feeling ever. I am very humbled by the opportunity to serve as SEIFC President."

Dean of Students Herbert Reeves said the election was an honor for both Hubbard and TROY.

"Scott's election demonstrates that Troy University fraternity members can and will take on leadership duties outside the University," he said. "We are proud of Scott and will support him in his new role with the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference."

Hubbard, who is minoring in political science, currently serves Lambda Chi Alpha as Vice President of External Affairs, and TROY's Interfraternity Council as Vice President of Administration and Risk Management.

"I am going to drive myself to do the best that I can do and dedicate to being the best SEIFC President this conference has ever had. I am also thankful to the University for providing me the opportunities to obtain leadership positions and supporting me in reaching my goal," he said.
