TROY – A 14-year old has been arrested and charged with robbery first degree in connection with an armed robbery on the Troy University campus in Troy.

The juvenile petition was submitted by Troy University Police, with the assistance of the Troy Police Department, and the juvenile is currently being held in the city’s Juvenile Detention Center at the Troy City Jail. Because of the juvenile status of the suspect, his name is not being released by law enforcement.

“Being able to make an arrest in this case so quickly has required a lot of team work and coordination between Troy Police and University Police, and I greatly appreciate the efforts of Chief Jimmy Ennis and his department,” said University Chief John McCall. “It’s yet another example of the close working relationship we have in Troy and Pike County to fight crime at all levels.”

Early Monday evening, a 20-year old male student was robbed outside Alumni Hall. Two suspects remain at large, and the case remains under investigation by police.

Troy University officials remind students to follow general safety precautions in the wake of an alleged armed robbery on the Troy Campus earlier tonight.

Personal preparedness is a critical component to individual safety. At Troy University, we urge our students, faculty and staff to take a few, common sense steps to increasing their own level of safety:

  1. Know your campus. Familiarize yourself with the services offered and where things are located on your campus.
  2. Don’t talk to strangers. Our parents admonished us, we remind our students to be suspicious of people who they don’t know. If you are unsure about talking with a person, just walk away.
  3. Lock your doors. This works whether it’s your car, your dorm room or an off-campus home or apartment. Lock up, and don’t open the door for anyone you do not know.
  4. Maintain “positive control.” Keep your personal items out of sight, in a secured location or with you at all times. Leaving items unattended invites problems.
  5. Use the “Buddy System.” Don’t go alone. Go in groups, or pairs when you’re out and about.
  6. Happy Trails. When you are going out for the evening, a weekend or just across town, let someone else know where you are going, with whom and when to expect you back. Let that person know when you change your plans.
  7. Stay “Eyes On.” Report suspicious persons or situations to police immediately. If you need to, dial 911. Stay alert and aware of your immediate environment. If you feel threatened in any way, call 911.

By taking these simple actions, we can partner to make the TROY experience even better.
