MONTGOMERY—Major General Walter D. Givhan of Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base will deliver the keynote address to Troy University graduates on Monday, May 20, during the spring commencement ceremony for the Montgomery Campus.
The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. inside the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts. About 180 students will receive undergraduate and graduate degrees this semester at the Montgomery Campus.
General Givhan, a TROY alumnus, serves as Commander of the Curtis E. LeMay Center for Doctrine Development and Education and Vice Commander of Air University. The LeMay Center is responsible for the research, development and production of Air Force doctrine and input for joint and multinational doctrine development activities.
A native of Safford, Ala., General Givhan graduated from Morgan Academy in Selma and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., where he was a National Merit Scholar. His postgraduate degrees include a Master of Science in interantional relations from Troy University in 1989.
He served as the U.S. air liaison officer to the commanding general, French ground forces, for operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and he led the effort to rebuild the Afghan air force as Commanding General of the Combined Air Power Transition Force. The general has commanded a combat training squadron, an operations group, an air base wing, an air expeditionary wing and the Air Force Institute of Technology.
His previous staff assignments include deputy military assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of the Congressional Action Division for the Air Force Legislative Liaison.
General Givhan is a command pilot with more than 2,500 flying hours in the T-37, T-38, T-1, AT-38, F-15 and A-10 aircraft.

MONTGOMERY—Troy University's Symphony Band will present a tribute to legendary TROY bandmaster Dr. John M. Long with a pair of concerts in Troy and Montgomery celebrating the career and achievements of the University's director of band's emeritus.
The first “Tribute to Dr. Long” concert will be held on the Troy Campus on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. inside the Claudia Crosby Theatre. This will be a joint concert with the Pearl City High School Band from Honolulu, Hawaii, featuring guest conductors Mike Nakasone and Paula Crider, who are close friends of Dr. Long. The band will perform some of Dr. Long's favorite music, and close with the “1812 Overture” in his honor. Admission is free and open to the public.
The second concert will at the Montgomery Campus on Thursday, March 28, at 7 p.m., inside the Davis Theatre for Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 and are on sale now. The program will include a selection of Dr. Long's favorite classic overtures, works by American composers, great marches and patriotic music, and a stirring rendition of John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever" conducted by Dr. Long himself.
Dr. Long, who served as director of bands at TROY from 1965-1996, is a past president of the American Bandmasters Association and is a member of the National Band Association's Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Conductors and the Alabama Bandmasters Hall of Fame.
Under his direction, the University's "Sound of the South" marching band represented the state in four presidential inaugural parades and served as the official band for two presidential visits to Alabama. During his 31-year career at TROY, Dr. Long also served the University in various capacities, including chair of the music department, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and dean of the School of Fine Arts.
Two buildings on the Troy Campus bear his name - John Maloy Long Hall and the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor, which houses the NBA's Hall of Fame.
Under the direction of conductor Dr. Mark Walker, The Symphony Band is Troy University's premier wind band, featuring the top 55 musicians in the John M. Long School of Music. This nationally recognized ensemble is open by audition only at the beginning of each semester and gives numerous concerts year-round. Additionally, the band records and tours extensively throughout the Southeast during the spring semester.

MONTGOMERY—An award-winning musical showcase from Branson, Mo., The Rankin Brothers Classic Music Revue, will come to Montgomery for one night only with a performance at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m.
Voted “Branson’s Best Show” the last three years and “Best Tribute Show 2011,” The Rankin Brothers Classic Music Revue includes tributes to famous musicians from many eras including Elvis, The Beatles, George Strait, John Denver, Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, Elton John and Sonny and Cher.
Backing the Rankin Brothers is an all-star cast featuring three award-winning female vocalists, The Rankinettes, and their multi-talented All-Star Band. The show has received more than 20 awards in the last four years and features timeless classics from rock ‘n roll, country, folk and gospel.
