Physical Plant—Frequently Asked Questions

Maintenance Related Answers to Common Questions

1. Why was a work request sent back as a project that the requesting department must pay for?

2. Why does it take a long time for work to be completed?

3. What should I do with my keys when I no longer need them?

4. Painting Policies

1. Why was a work request sent back as a project that the requesting department must pay for?

The resources provided to the maintenance staff are allocated for the maintaining of buildings in their designed condition. Any additions or improvements that alter the existing space are considered projects and are not funded by the maintenance department.

Depending on current demands, the maintenance staff sometimes has the ability to provide labor for projects; however, material costs are charged back to the requesting department.

2. Why does it take a long time for work to be completed?

In general, work requests are completed in the order in which they are received. Maintenance staff typically respond to work requests within three days unless the request is considered urgent (when there is a life safety or major comfort concern).

During certain times of the year when work order request demand is greater, it may require more time to respond to requests. If your request has a specific deadline please contact the maintenance manager to discuss how the work can be expedited. We encourage all requestors to plan as far ahead as possible so that requests do not become “emergencies” that could have been prevented.

3. What should I do with my keys when I no longer need them?

All keys must be returned to the physical plant. When keys are issued they are assigned to the individual who signs for them. If the keys are not returned an appropriate fee will be issued.

Transfer of keys between individuals is not permitted.

4. Painting Policies

No painting will be performed by any university faculty or staff without prior written Physical Plant approval.
