In this session of the program, the goal of TROY-STARTALK Teacher Program (Chinese) is to develop a cadre of teachers of Mandarin with the dispositions, knowledge, and skills needed to create and support a new generation of highly effective World Language educators. The program will invite 12 participants, including Chinese teachers, Chinese instructional supervisors, methods instructors, and potential Chinese teachers as well. The participants will engage in a professional development program covering Second Language Acquisition (SLA) practice and theory, language and culture instructional methods and assessments, curriculum design, language assessment, Chinese language structure and selecting the learning resources.
Integral to this program will be the development of a professional learning community that will support the participants as they return to their schools and take on the responsibility and challenges of the Chinese language teaching. This training program is designed to solve the problem of a shortage of qualified and professionally trained Chinese language teachers in Alabama and surrounding areas. The participants, either beginning or experienced Chinese teachers, will benefit from the program in the teaching of the Chinese language regarding classroom management, selection and evaluation of teaching resources. The courses offered in the program are residential for all participants and the participants will receive a certificate and materials and resources upon the completion of the program. Successful participants will receive three college credits from TROY University.
One of the program's benefits is that there is no cost, except a $100.00 application deposit refundable upon graduation. All participants are residential in Troy.
Participants must hold an undergraduate degree and must be teaching in, or are seeking to teach in, a K-12 Mandarin Chinese program in the states of Alabama and surrounding areas.
