Auditorium

The seating area is divided into a balcony and a main floor. The balcony (an extended floor - not an overhang) seats 616 while the main floor seats 584 for a total capacity of 1200. Both the balcony and the main floor are accessed from the lobby via two sets of stairs from the lobby.

The distance from the orchestra pit wall to the first row of seats is 10'4" and the stage floor is 3'10" above the floor of the house. The distance from the apron to the balcony wall is 78'.

Load-In Information

The load-in door opens directly onto the stage via a 12'X12' roll-up steel door located in the USR corner. The loading dock is 16'2" square, 2' above ground level and is at stage level.

Stage Dimensions and Information

The theatre stage is a resilient, flat floor constructed of 1/4" Masonite laid on a 3/4" plywood sub floor.

  • Proscenium Opening: Width - 32'6" Height - (MAX) - 26'8"
  • Distance from Apron to Plaster Line: 3'2"
  • Distance from Plaster Line to Upstage Wall: 35'2"
  • Distance from Grand Drape to Upstage Wall: 34'
  • Stage Width (wall to wall): 76'
  • Distance from Apron to Front Row Seats: 18'4"
  • Wing Space SR: 16'
  • Wing Space SL: 16'
  • Grid Height: 60'

There is an orchestra pit which extends 8' into the house from the stage apron. The pit is kept covered and requires 5 days prior notice and an additional fee to uncover it for an event.

The stage is accessible from the main floor to the house by means of steps on either side of the orchestra pit. Access to the main stage floor is only possible from the apron if the grand drape is open. Access to the backstage area and dressing rooms is available from the main house floor through an entrance House right. There is also a door DSL which allows stage access from the downstairs dressing rooms, the stage entrance, and the house.

Wing space on stage right is limited by the locking platform and pin rail. The stage right wing space is full stage height for 12' from the onstage edge of the legs. An additional 8' of wing space is available beneath the locking platform with a maximum vertical clearance of 8'1".

Wing space stage left is limited by the onstage dressing room located DSL. The onstage wall of the dressing room is 11'7" from the proscenium opening and extends 6'6" upstage from the downstage wall.

A 4' wide crossover may be made upstage by bringing in the cyclorama or the upstage traveler and crossing upstage of it.

Fly and Stage Rigging

The fly system is a single purchase counterweight system with 27 line sets. The locking platform is located stage right. Each arbor has a maximum capacity of 1100 pounds. The pipes are of steel composition 1 1/2" in diameter and 48' in length. There are 18 free line sets. A pin rail is located on the onstage side of the locking platform at a height of 13'3" above the stage floor. Please refer to the attached Line Set Schedule for the location and normal assignment of individual line sets.

Draperies

The Grand Drape is a 27 ounce gold curtain of the Austrian type and is new. The curtain flies and is operated by an electric winch. Curtain operation may be controlled from either the Stage Manager's position DSR or from the lighting console in the FOH control booth. The Grand Drape has an opening/closing time of 27 seconds.

All stage draperies, with the exception of the cyclorama, are made of 18 ounce velour. All legs, borders, valance, and travelers are black in color.

There are five sets of black legs available in the space. Two of the five hang as legs on line sets 9 and 25. These two sets form a thirty five foot opening with the onstage edge of each leg hanging 17'6" from center stage. The third set of legs normally hangs on line set 17 as the Mid-stage Traveler. This is a 24' H x 38' W curtain, in two pieces, which may be used to reduce the depth of the stage.

Three black borders mask the stage and are normally hanging on line sets 7, 15, and 23. The curtains measure 8' H x 48' W with ¾ sewn fullness. In addition, there is a valance on the first line set with the same dimensions and color as the borders.

Directly upstage of the Grand Drape and valance there is a House Curtain which normally hangs on line set two. The traveler is composed of two black curtains each of which measures 24' H x 27' W. The traveler is operated from DSR. Similarly, a black traveler hangs just downstage of the cyclorama on line set 31 having the same dimensions as the house curtain. The upstage traveler is also operated from the stage right position.

There is one white cyclorama hanging from line set 32. The cyc is a white filled Leno cyclorama curtain and is 29' H x 48' W. When either the upstage traveler or the cyc is in, a crossover is created on its upstage side. The distance from the cyc to the upstage wall is 4'.

There is a 288 space dimmer rack located on the DSR wall which contains 112 dimmer drawers with 2 dimmers each for a total of 224 solid state dimmers. Each dimmer has a capacity of 2400 watts. Dimmer drawers may be moved to different spaces within the rack so that each circuit in use will have a dimmer. Non-dim circuits are available only by soft patch and are therefore not suitable for intelligent lights.

The dimmers are controlled by an ETC Express 48/96 board. There are 24 programmable submasters on 10 pages, giving 240 submasters and 96 channel sliders. The console is capable of controlling 1024 dimmers, with 2 DMX inputs. The board is located in the FOH control booth.

Alabama: Here We Stay

"Alabama: Here We Stay" is a collaborative performance project between the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and Alabama composer, performer and music historian Bob- by Horton, celebrating "The Year of Alabama Music" and honoring the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Horton, one of the country's leading authorities on music of the Civil War era, has worked closely with the ASO to cre- ate a concert program that tells the stories of soldiers from Alabama, both Confederate and Union, through the music they loved. Through an engaging combination of live music, story- telling and audience participation, communities all over the state will learn about Alabama's role in the Civil War and the lasting impact of music on the human spirit in the past, present and future.

The sound of Christmas
For Elisabeth von Trapp, the sounds of music are part of her earliest memories. Born and raised in Vermont, Elisabeth is the granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired The Sound of Music. Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center.

The Empire Brass enjoysan internation- al reputation as North America’s finest brass quintet, renowned for its brilliant virtuosity and the unparalleled diversity of its repertoire. The five musicians — all of whom have held leading positions with major American orchestras — per- form over 100 concerts a year in cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago,

Washington, London, Zurich and Tokyo. With their best-selling record- ings on the Telarc label, they have introduced an even larger audience worldwide to the excitement of brass music, ranging from Bach and Handel to jazz and Broadway.

With a voice that critics have called “hauntingly clear” (New York Times), Elisabeth, along with the Empire Brass, “…will send a thrill of pleasure through your nervous system” (Boston Globe).

JANUARY 25, 1930

This grand theatre opened on January 25, 1930, as The Paramount Theatre. It was a Movie Palace, designed for the talkies and Vaudeville shows. Countless numbers of patrons not only enjoyed movies and shows in the palace, but many couples enjoyed their first date, first kiss or marriage proposal here. There were many weddings held on the stage of The Paramount!

GONE WITH THE WIND

in 1976, after the last feature Gone With the Wind the majestic Paramount Theatre closed its doors. The theatre was purchased by Troy University and reopened in 1983 as The Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts. Named for the late Tine W. Davis and his wife Eunice, the major contributors to the restoration process.

The Davis Theatre is a downtown landmark and is one of only a handful of such theatres still standing across the South. The acoustics are excellent, and with twelve-hundred seats, the size is perfect. It has a full-size orchestra pit, and the stage is easily seen from any seat in the house. There is a feeling of intimacy long since sacrificed in modern theatre design.

The Davis Theatre is ideal for Montgomery's needs in size, design and location; in the center of a revitalized downtown area where it is a perfect complement to the city's convention facilities.

The theatre hosts amateur and professional musicals, dramatic productions, chamber music groups, symphony orchestras, dance groups, ballets and instrumental performances of all types. Moreover, the theatre is available to civic, cultural and educational institutions to merge these programs with other activities to expand and enrich the life of the community. In the downtown Montgomery area, civic and convention groups have access to a lavish, nostalgic, first-rate, multi-purpose theatre.

RESTORATION PHASES

  1. The original plaster ornamentation have been reproduced exactly. The ornate chandeliers have been restored by hand to their original luster. In addition, the entire air conditioning, heating and electrical distribution systems have been replaced, and new carpeting installed throughout. The Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts reopened its doors with a Gala Grand Reopening on May 21, 1983. James Whitmore performed the title role in Will Rogers' U.S.A. for this historic event.
  2. A complete state-of-the-art audio and lighting system was installed, all of the theatre seats were replaced, the riggings and curtains were replaced, the stage and backstage areas were enlarged.
  3. the complete exterior of the theatre was restored to its original beauty, including the grand marquee.
