Selection Criteria
Girls are eligible to attend Alabama Girls State if they meet the following criteria:
- They have completed their junior year in high school
- They are interested in government and current events
- They have high moral character
- They have strong leadership abilities
- They have an above average scholastic standing
Girls State Citizens are a diverse group who share a common desire to learn. From small towns to urban areas, the delegates' different backgrounds add spirit to the program.
One girl from each high school in the State of Alabama will be accepted as a citizen of Alabama Girls State. Schools with 1-300 students in their junior class may send one delegate to Girls Sate. Schools with 301 – 600 students in their junior class may send two delegates to Girls State. Schools where the junior class exceeds 601 may send three delegate to Girls State.
Selection of Girls State Citizens
Girls State is intended for the most outstanding girls, from the standpoint of leadership, character, and scholarship in the high schools. Only those girls who will enthusiastically devote their FULL TIME to increasing their knowledge, while at the same time advancing the whole Girls State Program, should be chosen.
We have created a Girls State Application which you may give out for girls to fill out for the selection process. You can certainly add additional questions and/or have the girls write an essay, etc. if you wish. After the girl is selected from your school you are to send the Girls State Application and $200.00 fee to the American Legion Auxiliary, 120 North Jackson Street, Montgomery, AL 36104. Checks should be made out to Alabama Girls State. Applications will be accepted until May 13, 2011. The application fee includes everything the girls will need while at Girls State, including meals, housing,and manuals. We do recommend the girls bring at least $60.00 for t-shirts, soft drinks, etc.
It is very important that the e-mail address given for the Girls State citizen be checked daily. We will correspond with the candidate by e-mail. She will receive by e-mail the user name and password for on-line registration as soon as her payment is received. She must fill out the on-line registration form before May 18 to be officially registered with Alabama Girls State. We also will be inviting her to follow our Twitter feed, join our Facebook group and our text message group.
Once your candidate is selected encourage her to review and start filling out the forms under the forms section of this website.
Sponsorship
Girls will be accepted for enrollment when sponsored directly by a unit of the American Legion Auxiliary or approved by a unit for sponsorship by another organization. Every unit of the American Legion Auxiliary in Alabama is urged to sponsor one or more citizens to Girls State. It is expected that most of the citizens will be sponsored by units. However, sponsorship of some citizens by civic, fraternal, and patriotic organizations, high schools and individuals is highly encouraged. Units are encouraged to contact community organizations most likely to sponsor a citizen. All citizens sponsored by organizations other than units will be selected in the same manner as those sponsored by Auxiliary units. Enrollment is limited. Therefore, Auxiliary units and other organizations desiring to sponsor citizens should make plans early to do so, sending fees at the earliest convenient date.

The final step to register for Alabama Girls State is the on-line registration form. After application and fee are received by the candidate she will be e-mailed the user name and password to register on-line. She must on-line register before May 18th.
