SUMTER – Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis will provide the commencement address during commencement exercises at Troy University Thursday, May 26.
Some 55 students, including 28 graduate degree students, are expected to receive their diplomas at 6 p.m. in the Sumter Opera House, said Lisa Bennett, TROY's site director in Sumter.
"Sheriff Dennis has a strong presence in the community and he has served in various capacities from training and educating to advising and being mentor to youth," Bennett said. "We are honored to have him provide this guidance to our graduates."
Dennis holds a master of science degree in criminal justice from TROY, completed a bachelor of science degree in criminology from Saint Leo College and an associate's degree in criminology from Central Carolina Technical College. He graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1976. He is a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, the FBI National Academy and the 90th National Sheriff's Institute Executive Level Management School. He is a certified instructor with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
A 29-year veteran of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, he has been involved in all phases of law enforcement, including serving as commander of the Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division and as chief deputy from 2000 until taking office as sheriff in 2005.
Dennis is a member of the FBI National Academy, the South Carolina Sheriff's Association, the National Sheriff's Association, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Association, the Palmetto Law Enforcement Association and is the chairperson of the Charlie Kubala Memorial Scholarship Fund. He heads the Homeland Security Committee for Sumter County and serves on the BRAC Quality of Life Committee, Sumter County Children's Advocacy Center Board, Sumter County Greenhouse Board and Project Turn Around Board.
In addition, he is a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where he serves as a trustee. He is an adjunct professor at both Morris College and Central Carolina Technical College, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and is a master mason in the Catchall Masonic Lodge #425.
