MONTGOMERY—A “two-woman” show featuring Emmy Award winning-performer Vicki Lawrence and her beloved character “Mama” will headline the 2009-2010 season at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Season tickets are on sale now for the upcoming season, which features six professional touring theatre productions and four bonus University and Community Series events. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the Theatre office at 334-241-9567.
The season will open on Thursday, Oct. 15, with “Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show.” Lawrence was a high school senior when chosen to become part of the now-legendary cast of “The Carol Burnett Show.” During her time on the show, Lawrence created the role for which she is most remembered—Thelma Harper or “Mama,” a beloved character who would inspire her own sitcom, “Mama’s Family.” The performance features both Lawrence and “Mama” in a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and observations about real life.
On Friday, Dec. 11, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas will bring their timeless music to the Davis Theatre stage. The trio was one of the most successful groups on the Motown Records label during the 60s, charting 24 hits including “Heatwave,” “Jimmy Mack,” “Nowhere to Run” and “Dancing in the Streets.”
Aaron Wilburn will perform on Friday, Jan. 22. A feature on the Gaither Homecoming tour and videos, Wilburn has endeared himself to thousands of fans with his down-home brand of humor as he talks about his southern roots, his family, children and his faith.
The Tony-nominated Broadway musical comedy “The Wedding Singer” will be presented on Thursday, Feb. 4. Based on the 1998 film staring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrrymore, “The Wedding Singer” was called “a good-natured, high-energy musical” by Newsday.
On Tuesday, March 16, Five By Design will take the audience on a journey back to the time of big bands, hep cats and the Hollywood Canteen with their production of “Radio Days.”
The season will end on Thursday, April 15, with an evening of comedy, juggling and dangerous stunts during “Passing Zone: Gravity Attacks” featuring John Wee and Owen Morse.
Four bonus shows have been added to the season in the University and Community Series. The bonus shows are: The Montgomery Ballet on Friday, Oct. 30; “A Salute to Our Nation’s Veterans” featuring the TROY Symphony Band on Thursday, Nov. 12; “Down Memory Lane” with the Capitol Sounds on Friday, Feb. 26 and “From Big Band to Broadway” with the TROY Jazz Ensemble on Tuesday, March 30.
