TROY—Demarcus Ware, former Troy University football standout and current all-star linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, will headline a roster of “roasters” of TROY Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. at an upcoming event designed to raise money for a new scholarship.
The Jack Hawkins, Jr. Leadership Scholarship Roast is scheduled for Wednesday, March 17, at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. A reception is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and roasting festivities to follow, according to Lamar P. Higgins, a member of the Troy University Board of Trustees and the chair of planning committee.
“We wanted to mark Dr. Hawkins’ 20th anniversary as Chancellor with a special event that would also benefit current and future students of Troy University,” Higgins said. “This scholarship will have a positive impact on Troy University for generations to come.”
The event is sponsored by the University’s Board of Trustees, which has set a goal of $100,000 to endow a scholarship in the Chancellor’s name. Individual tickets are $50 a person and may be reserved by calling the Troy University Office of Development at 334-670-3608.
Ware, a four-time Pro Bowl selection at linebacker, was a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection during his TROY playing days. He was the first Trojan ever taken in the first round of the NFL draft. Ware was recently named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade team.
Other roasters will include a member of the Board of Trustees and colleagues, friends and family of Dr. Hawkins. Dr. David Bronner, chief executive officer of the Retirement System of Alabama, will serve as the master of ceremonies.
A native of Mobile, Ala., Dr. Hawkins was named Chancellor of Troy University Sept. 1, 1989. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Montevallo and his doctorate from the University of Alabama. Before coming to TROY, Dr. Hawkins served as the president of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind from 1979-89.
