Mobile businessman and public servant will provide keynote address

TROY – Mobile businessman and public servant Ralph Buffkin will provide the commencement address at Troy University July 23.

Graduation exercises will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Sartain Hall. About 250 representing 12 countries and 13 states are expected to receive their diplomas.

Buffkin currently is Director of Human Resources, Information Technology and Payroll for Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran and is part of the command staff that oversees some 600 employees. In what he terms as his “fifth career,” Buffkin has been a leader in manufacturing, transportation, consulting and has owned four companies in his 40-plus year career.

Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Department, he owned and operated Buffkin Management Services, LLC that provided financial and management advice to clients in transportation, construction, manufacturing, finance and service industries. He was a partner of Azalea Capital Leasing that helped generate more than $20 million in lease originations and developed alternative financing solutions to businesses and was general manager and vice-president of Choctaw Transport, Inc.

From 1991-1998, Buffkin was comptroller and vice-president of Saraland-based Southern Valve Services, Inc. after a 25-year career at Ciba-Geigy in McIntosh.

He serves on the State Workforce Investment Board, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education as its finance committee chairman, the Senior Bowl Committee and the Mobile Works Board. His prior service includes membership in the United States Sports Academy, the City of Mobile Sports Commission, Envision Mobile, Mobile Solid Waste Advisory Board, the Mobile Job Training Partnership Board, the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, Mobile United, Leadership Mobile, and as director of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game for 13 years.
