DOTHAN—Local science and math teachers will learn innovative new classroom techniques during a four-day professional development workshop offered by Troy University's Wiregrass Math, Science and Technology Leadership Academy.
About 40 Wiregrass-area elementary and middle school teachers, along with students in TROY's education program, will take part in the workshop on June 9-10 and June 13-14 at the Dothan Campus.
Funded by a grant from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, the workshop will provide teachers with instruction on how to enhance the teaching of math and science concepts, and how to effectively use technology in the classroom, said Dr. Vijaya Gompa, a TROY professor of mathematics and co-director of the Wiregrass Math, Science and Technology Leadership Academy.
"Teachers will be provided with supplies, materials, manipulatives and technological components to promote classroom learning and student achievement," Dr. Gompa said.
The Wiregrass Math, Science and Technology Leadership Academy is a new TROY initiative designed to provide area teachers with professional development opportunities in math and science education.
