2020 Troystar Program

Program Description

The goal of this program, TROY-STAR Chinese Summer Camp for teachers, in its 11th year, is to
develop a cadre of teachers of Mandarin with the dispositions, knowledge, and skills needed to
create and support a new generation of highly effective World Language educators. 

This program is designed to solve the problem of the shortage of qualified and professionally
trained Chinese language teachers in the USA. The participants, either new or experienced Chinese language teachers, will benefit from the Chinese language teaching program in terms of online classroom management, selection and evaluation of teaching resources. The courses offered in the program are online for all participants and the participants will receive a certificate and materials and resources upon completion of the program. Successful participants will receive three or more credits from Troy University.

Registration Day

REGISTRATION DAY

 

Day 1

Troy-Star 2020 virtual program opening ceremony banner 
Dr. Lance Tatum addressed the participants in the opening ceremony in a recorded message. 
The participants’ tiles line up to make a digital group picture.  
Mr. Chen, first presentation of the program, presented about the best ways to interact with students with online courses 
Fujun Li shared the second presentation of the camp. 
Scholar Zhelin Dang presented about ways to make competition for online courses more interesting

Dr. Hawkins quote was shown in the presentation about Terracotta warriors 
The numerous participants listened intently to the class presentation.

Day 2

The presentation on “Differentiated Instruction” opens with a bright slide to catch the audience’s attention.  
Mr. Liu describes his teaching experiences.  
The participants’ tiles fill the screen as they wait in anticipation for the day’s lectures to begin. 
He Yan holds the finished rose for the participants to see while they finish up their own crafts. 
He Yan demonstrated step by step the rose-making process for the seminar. 
The teachers in the program were shown varieties of different paper flowers. 
Participants show off their hand-made paper roses on screen.

Day 3

Athena Chang shared a presentation on the challenges of teaching in American elementary schools addressing the goals and philosophies. 
The participants’ tiles fill the screen while Ms. Chang lectures.  
Ms. Chang shares a slide of lyrics from a song for students.  
The participants pose for a virtual group picture.  
The paper-cutting culture class opens with a dark slide and intricate red pattern, indicating the complexity and beauty of the topic. 
Zhijing Qiu explains the meanings of different symbols to the class. 
The participants carefully watched detailed instructions on how to make beautiful paper-cutting designs. 
The seminar attendees hold up their finished crafts proudly.

Day 4

 Dr. Feng begins presentation on language multiplicity on the fourth day of the seminar.  
Dr. Feng ends his first lecture of the day with a bright slide thanking the participants for their time and attention.  
Dr. Rui Zhang explains to the class how to make an official WeChat account. 
Dr. Feng shares a diagram of different models of language mastery relating reading, speaking, writing, and listening.  
Ms. Su shares with the class a decorative slide that lists the materials they will need for the craft activity. 
A photo-series accompanies her explanation to show step by step instructions for making sandbags. 
The participants hold up their finished jianzi, proudly made at home.

Day 5

Dr. Xu shares pictures of her time with the Confucius Institute with the participants. 
Dr. Xu shares another example of the “Never Say No to Panda” marketing strategy.  
Dr. Xu explains the “Never Say No to Panda,” campaign.  
The participants ask questions about the presentation and Dr. Xu answers them.  
Ms. Zu gives a presentation on traditional Chinese games.  
The activity features a slide on paper planes, decorated in pastel images of small children making and playing with paper planes.

Day 6

The CIT staff and Visiting Scholars wish Dr. Xu a happy birthday.  
Mr. Liu talks to the participants about his experiences teaching Chinese Language in North America.  
Ms. Yang shares examples of mind maps with the participants.  
Mr. Chen shares an image of his classroom management rules with the participants.

Closing Ceremony

Mr. Chen seized the opportunity addressing the program to thank all the people involved with running the program. 
Dr. Li Fang addresses the teacher participants and encourages them to look to Troy for inspiration. 
Xiangming Kou, one of the teacher representatives, addresses the program trainees.
