Phenix City, AL Riverfront Campus – Troy University’s Phenix City Campus will host a fundraising event, the Dr. Cherie Fretwell Scholarship Fundraiser Gala, at the campus on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at 7:00 pm EST. The gala seeks to further expand educational opportunities for motivated and deserving students by raising money for a scholarship to honor Dr. Cherie Fretwell’s legacy of mentoring and assisting students to realize their full potential and educational dreams.  Guests are encouraged to wear black-tie apparel for an evening of dining, a cash bar, and entertainment with live music.

This event brings our community, alumni, and Troy University leaders, faculty, staff, and students as we celebrate the life and 35 years of service of Dr. Cherie Fretwell to our Phenix City students.  The evening will include a special presentation to recognize the distinguished academic service of Dr. Fretwell to Troy University.  Dr. Fretwell has been chosen to receive the honorary title of Emeritus Professor.  Emeritus Professor is awarded to a select number of faculty who have made an exceptional contribution in academic leadership and outstanding achievement in his or her discipline.  Receiving the award in Dr. Fretwell's honor will be her family.

Forever remembered Dr. Cherie Fretwell:

Dr. Fretwell joined the Troy State University faculty in 1983 as an adjunct, and was named professor and department chair of the Sorrell College of Business in 1986, a position she held until being named assistant dean in 2012.  She taught ethical leadership and management, business communications, and organizational behavior. TROY students were always Dr. Fretwell’s passion and priority in her career.

Dr. Fretwell is quite famous at the Phenix City Campus and will forever be remembered for her teaching style, which combined humor, a personal touch, and a light-hearted approach to complicated business topics.  Knowing everyone by name was commonplace in her classroom.  We were all so lucky to have such a caring, inspiring leader in our college.  She touched the lives of many and is deeply missed by all.

Before joining the Troy University family, Dr. Fretwell was a vocational office training coordinator for West Point High School (Ga.), a real estate broker and owner and an office manager for the Agricultural Research Consortium. She completed the doctorate in organizational behavior in 1989 at the University of Southern Mississippi, after having completed master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Auburn University in business education.  Dr. Fretwell passed on October 10, 2018, at her home in Auburn.
