World Music Workshop is a hands-on course that surveys traditional music from around the globe, with an emphasis on exploratory play. Students will perform traditional music on a variety of traditional instruments and learn about cultural traditions that comprise the context of the musical traditions represented in their play. Much of the course will introduce students to the music they would be able to perform as an outlet in a world music ensemble, but the content of the course will be localized to exploratory play, discussion, and listening analysis geared toward giving participants a hands-on experience with cultural music traditions, both global and local, that are not widely represented in mainstream Western culture.
Students are expected to think critically and analyze varied cultural traditions in their class discussions, but as a hands-on workshop course there are no formal written assignments.
