Today, more than ever, the hospitality, sport, and tourism industries are woven into the social, cultural, and economic fabric of society, and continue to be a global enterprise with a wide range of career opportunities. The newly-created School of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management (HSTM) provides a diverse curriculum that combines industry-specific courses with professional electives along with broad-based experiential learning components. Students will experience a curriculum that strives to provide students seeking careers in the hospitality, sport, and tourism industries a comprehensive perspective through an advanced curriculum which focuses on current industry practices, enhancing communication and people skills, and developing successful managers and administrators. Students are encouraged to take theory and knowledge from their coursework and apply it to real-world learning experiences through volunteer opportunities, fieldwork, practicums, and internships. This process is enhanced by the fact that our faculty members have practitioner experience in the hospitality, sport, and tourism industries.
The School of HSTM has cultivated strong relationships with several hospitality, sport, and tourism organizations, including the Troy University Athletics Department. Many of our HSTM students play key roles in the success of these organizations. In addition, the HSTM program’s industry relationships provide numerous real world experiences for students through internships and volunteer opportunities. These real world experiences foster learning and professional networking opportunities that assist students in job placement and career advancement.
Students in the Troy University HSTM program gain hands on experience in their classes through field trips, guest speakers, and other class related activities and projects. In recent years, HSTM students have travelled to New Orleans to volunteer at the Super Bowl, volunteered for the Raycom College Football All-Star Classic in Montgomery, Alabama, had Study Aboard opportunities in Costa Rica and Australia, and participated in internships in Gold Coast, Australia. During these excursions, our students have had the opportunity to interact with some of today’s top sport industry managers, which include Major League front office Vice Presidents, College Conference Commissioners, university Athletics Directors, and various other industry administrators and executives. Industry related administrators and executives have also lectured in the classroom, either live or via video conference, to share their expertise with students. Additionally, the HSTM program limits the number of students in each course to foster interaction between students and faculty.
