Community-Based Learning

Community-Based Learning (CBL): Exploring the Possibilities with Troy University and Portland State University

About the Event

Troy University and Portland State University partnered to present a virtual conference on April 6, 2016. The conference focused on the topics of community-based learning (CBL) and its virtual possibilities. As a leader in online education for more than 15 years, Troy University brought its rock-solid experience in the online field to the table as it joined with Portland State University—an institution celebrating 20 years of engaged Capstones and continued innovation in the area of community-based learning.

Almost 200 participants joined us as the two universities teamed up to share their strategies and initiatives on CBL and service-learning in this exciting virtual symposium featuring keynote speaker Dr. Jean Strait of Hamline University, one of the founders of eService-Learning and author of eService-Learning: Creating Experiential Learning and Civic Engagement Through Online and Hybrid Courses.

Conference Details

The conference was delivered online via WebEx. An in-person viewing party was hosted on the Troy Campus as well as at Portland State University.

The conference benefited:

  • Faculty members who teach online courses but don’t utilize community-based learning in their curriculum.
  • Faculty members who teach through the use of community-based learning but are hesitant at the thought of teaching online.
  • Students and staff members who are curious about community-based learning and the use of social action in classes.
