This program will prepare you to help communities navigate issues such as poverty and cultural and racial prejudices and large-scale, life-changing events such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks.
When communities are suffering, people often need more in-depth counseling. TROY’s community counseling program will equip you with the professional tools you’ll need to be the bridge that brings people together in times of need. Our experienced and dedicated faculty will lead you though diverse classes and introduce you to broader experiences in counseling. This program’s knowledge base will serve to expand your exposure to theories of counseling, group leadership and specialized areas of study. This will prepare you to help restore peace and tackle tough problems.
Through your studies, you’ll hone the communication and leadership skills needed for understanding and connecting with communities and students as they face issues such as substance abuse, increased dropout rates at schools and increased psychological disorders. You’ll graduate from the program having learned the necessary skills to apply sound clinical and ethical judgment and how to serve diverse cultures. You will also learn how to better understand current trends/issues and to become more self-aware.
With many employers now requiring counselors to become licensed, the coursework in this program can be used to meet licensure requirements and help advance your career. In order to further your knowledge and understanding of community counseling, you will complete a field project and/or thesis in an area of professional interest that is pertinent to the field of counselor education. However, it is important to understand the licensing board makes the determination on the acceptance of courses.
