International experience: O’Mara coaches Venezuelan National Softball team at World Championships

TROY Assistant Softball Coach Sharon O’Mara received an unexpected opportunity this past summer.

O’Mara, entering her third season as a member of the TROY softball program, served as a member of the coaching staff for the Venezuelan National Team in the World Championships.

O’Mara received a call from her friend Kim Wright, head coach of the Venezuelan team. So, instead of going home to see family and friends, the New South Wales, Australia native boarded a plane to Caracas.

The team beat Australia and China and finished second place in its pool. The performance jumped the Venezuelan team from eighth place to fifth place in the world rankings.

It was not O’Mara’s first exposure to international competition. She had won numerous titles in Australia and has also coached in British Columbia and Georgia before coming to TROY. It was, however, an experience she says she will never forget and one she hopes to be able to repeat in the future.

“Having international experience can only help you in the long run,” she said. “Seeing the top players in the world compete, and seeing how those top coaches interact with those players, gives me some experience I can use here at TROY. Hopefully this will open more doors. I also hope it brings some attention here to TROY.”
