Milestone Win for Melanie Davis
Trojan softball Coach Melanie Davis recorded a milestone win this
spring, collecting her 850th career victory in a win over the Golden
Eagles of Southern Mississippi. The Trojans swept a double header
from Southern Miss with a pair of come-from-behind victories, to give
Davis career wins 850 and 851. The team finished the season with a
21-32 mark. Junior Kacie McAllister was named First Team All-Sun
Belt Conference, while senior catcher Hannah Renn and senior first
baseman Caitlin Ortiz earned second team all-conference honors.
Phil Cunningham takes helm of Trojan basketball
Phil Cunningham was named the sixth head coach in Trojan men’s basketball
history in March, taking over for Don Maestri who retired after leading the
program for 31 years.
Cunningham spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State
before joining the staff at Western Kentucky last season. He also previously
spent five seasons as an assistant under legendary head coach Charles “Lefty”
Driesell at James Madison and Georgia State.
“It’s really a privilege that I’m following Don Maestri who’s been a friend and
more like a mentor,” Cunningham said. “He developed a great program and you
knew when you played TROY you were going to be in for a dog fight.”
Cunningham said there are three things Trojan fans can expect to see from his teams.
“From a basketball point-of-view, I’m an up-tempo, man-to-man defense
kind of guy, but what you will see from our team is three things: togetherness, I
want it to be about the team, not about me or the players, but the team,” he said.
“Second, I want us to be competitive. We’re going to be mentally and physically
tough, but we’ve got to be competitive. Another thing from a basketball perspective is that our team is going to be skilled.”
