Distinguished Leader – Alumnus Al Head receives University’s highest alumni honor

Al Head

Al Head, the Executive Director of the Alabama Council on the Arts, was honored for his service to the state and to his alma mater as he received the Distinguished Leadership Award, Troy University’s most prestigious award for a graduate.

Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, presented the award at the annual Spring Alumni Reunion Banquet, held in March in the Trojan Center Ballrooms on the Troy Campus with more than 200 members of the Troy University family in attendance.

The Distinguished Leadership Award was created to recognize the achievements of TROY alumni and friends who have distinguished themselves through exemplary work, philanthropy, leadership and service to their profession, community and alma mater.

Head, who has served in arts administration for more than 30 years, is a member of the TROY class of 1971.

Chancellor Hawkins, in presenting the award to Head, made note of the honoree’s distinguished academic and athletic record at Troy University, where he was a member of the 1968 NAIA national championship football team and two-year starter at quarterback for the Red Wave.

“When I think of Al Head, the term that comes to mind is ‘Renaissance Man,’” Chancellor Hawkins said.  “Al was one of Troy University’s most successful scholar-athletes.”

Head, in receiving the award, said there “are so many others who deserve this award for their outstanding leadership.”

Head, an Andalusia native who grew up in Troy and graduated from Charles Henderson High School, has served as the executive director of the Alabama State Council on the Arts since 1985.

Head also previously served as executive director of the Division of Arts for the Arts Council of Louisiana, executive director of the Stephen Foster Folklife Center in White Springs, FL, and as assistant director of the Florida Arts Council’s Division of Cultural Affairs.

Head also served as the keynote speaker for the University’s annual Honors Convocation on the Troy Campus in April.
