‘Cowboy Mike’ discusses legacy of black cowboys

Augusta State University history professor Michael Searles brought his presentations on black cowboys in the American West to students at Troy University in February. Searles created the persona of “Cowboy Mike” to help audiences better understand the Western experiences of black cowboys. As “Cowboy Mike,” Searles dresses in authentic Western gear and displays his collection of Western artifacts including chaps, spurs, lariat and branding iron. Searles offered his presentation on the University’s Dothan Campus on Feb. 6 and met with students on the Troy Campus, as well as students from local elementary schools on Feb. 7.
