Best season: Men’s tennis team earns first-ever NCAA tournament bid

Troy University’s men’s tennis team is coming off of an historic season, including the team’s first-ever bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Trojans, who lost to Auburn in opening round regional play at the Ring Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Florida, finished the season with a 20-5 record, marking the most victories in the program’s history.

The season was also highlighted by the team’s first-ever Sun Belt Conference Championship.

The successful season helped to earn Hayes a pair of coaching awards.

Hayes was selected as Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year and was also named the Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Coach of the Year.

Hayes said the Regional Coach of the Year Award was truly a team effort.

“This award shows the hard work put it by everyone associated with this team,” Hayes said.  “I wish I could take the award and cut it half to give one half of it to my assistant Tyler (Faulkner). The guys are the ones who won this award, they are the ones who have to go out there and play.”
