TROY—Two Troy University students will be heading to Birmingham this week to compete for the title of Miss Alabama and the possible chance to represent the state at the Miss America pageant.
TROY students Amber Dodson will represent Troy as Miss Troy University and Tyler Looney will represent her hometown as Miss Sylacauga.
Dodson is a senior nursing major and her platform is GOLD- Gift of Life Donation. She will perform a baton routine for her talent. Looney is a junior elementary education major from Sylacauga. Her platform is Passion for Pets and she will be performing a vocal piece for her talent.
The pageant consists of 50 contestants from across the state. Preliminary competition is scheduled for June 4-6 and the new Miss Alabama will be crowned June 7. Some contestants represent their universities and colleges, while others represent different cities, counties and regions throughout the state.
During the competition, contestants are judged in five areas including: talent, swimsuit, interview, evening gown and on-stage question. The contestants are also judged on participation with their platform, which is an organization or cause they support.
The competition spans four days as judges interview, score and review every contestant on their talents, strengths and even weaknesses. The event is held on the campus of Samford University.
The winner of Miss Alabama will receive a $10,000 cash scholarship along with many other prizes and the role of representing the state at the Miss America Pageant.
