TROY - Buddy Johnson of Luverne has been named Director of Radio and Television at Troy University. His appointment was announced by Dr. John W. Schmidt, Senior Vice Chancellor of Advancement and External Relations.
“Buddy is a Trojan through and through, a TROY graduate with family members who are proud alumni,” Dr. Schmidt said. “He brings a wealth of broadcasting talent to his new position with 36 years of varied challenges in the field. We are pleased that he is on our team.”
As director, Johnson oversees the operation of the University’s three National Public Radio affiliates, WTSU-FM 89.9, Montgomery/Troy, WRWA-FM 88.7, Dothan and WTJB-FM 91.7, Phenix City/Columbus. The position also includes management of TrojanVision, the Troy Campus TV station; and the Montgomery Campus television stations.
“It is truly an honor to be chosen to return to my alma mater to oversee the operation of the Department of Radio and Television,” Johnson said. “I look forward to giving back to the University that holds so many great memories for both me and my family.”
Johnson started his broadcast career at WTBF radio while a student at Troy. After graduation he worked as an account executive and sports director for WKMX radio. In television he has held positions at WSLA-TV, (CBS Affiliate), WEAR-TV (ABC Affiliate), and WDFX-TV, (Fox Affiliate). Prior to joining TROY, Johnson served as the national/regional sales manager for WRJM-TV in the Troy/Montgomery television market.
A native of Pensacola, FL, Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in music from TROY. Johnson was also a member of the Collegiate Singers and the “Sound of the South” Marching Band and was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Honorary Professional Music Fraternity.
Johnson’s wife, Theresa is an English instructor at the University and is also a TROY graduate. They have three children, Jason, Troy and Lindsay, who are also TROY graduates.
