TROY, Ala.—It all started with a presentation to a professional development group, but ended in the publication of a new book on global distance learning for Troy University eCampus Director Deb Gearhart.

“Cases on Distance Delivery and Learning Outcomes,” by publisher IGI Global, examines the best practices in the field of distance education and features cases on distance education programs.

Dr. Gearhart served as editor of the compilation of case studies submitted for publication, which was prompted by her presentation, “Let’s Write a Book.”

“I was happy to be asked to edit this publication. It was a great opportunity to network with other practitioners in my field,” she said. “The case book is a compilation of best practices in distance education at both the course and program level.”

Following the presentation and prompted by the publisher, Gearhart said she sent out a “call for chapters” to distance educators around the globe.

“ ‘Cases On Distance Delivery and Learning Outcomes’ promises to assist all of us in understanding the power, influence, challenges and potential of this new frontier upon which we stand,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., Chancellor of Troy University.

With more than 20 years of experience in online and distance education, Dr. Gearhart, was named eCampus director in June 2007, after serving as founding director of E-Education Services at Dakota State University for the 11 years. Prior to that, she was affiliated with Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Distance Education for 10 years.

Dr. Gearhart earned her doctorate in education with a certificate in distance education from Capella University after completing a master of public administration degree and a master of education in adult education at Penn State. Her undergraduate degree in sociology was completed at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
