TROY— Troy University’s student-led television station, TrojanVision, captured top honors as the best College TV Station in the Southeast Journalism Conference’s “Best of the South” contest.
The Best of the South awards were presented Friday during the SEJC’s 25th annual convention held at Troy University. More than 120 students were ranked in 24 categories as being among the “Best of the South” in the annual competition, which is open to the organization’s member schools from eight states. This year’s competition included 331 entries from 33 eligible member schools. Judges for the competition included 20 journalism professionals from newspapers, broadcast outlets and magazines across the country.
“The purpose of the SEJC contest is to function as a journalism teaching tool, as well as a competition,” said Dr. Jeff Spurlock, SEJC president and associate director of TROY’s Hall School of Journalism and Communication. “All entries are given a rating, and judges are encouraged to provide comments and professional advice.”
Kyle Bozeman, television manager in TROY’s Broadcast and Digital Network Department, said the recognition is indicative of the type of education and experience TROY’s broadcast journalism students receive.
Naturally we are very proud of this recognition,” Bozeman said. “I think it indicates the quality of hands on experience that our students get. Our students get an experience here that is unequalled at any university in the region. That is what makes our graduates desired at commercial stations and prepared to go to work on day one and be successful in the field of broadcasting.”
Three TROY students also won individual honors during the contest. Joseph Melanoon, a senior graphic design major from Grand Bay, took second place in the News-Editorial Artist/Illustrator category, while Jennifer Harrison, a senior print journalism major from Mobile, took fifth in the Advertising Staff Member category and Jonathan Bryant, a senior applied computer science major from Goshen, tied for sixth in the Arts and Entertainment Writer category.
