TROY, Ala.—Peggy Stewart, staff accountant in Auxiliary Services at Troy University, has received the University's Vergil Parks McKinley Award.

Stewart, who has been a member of the Troy University staff since 1998 and served in her current position since 2005, received the award July 12 during a ceremony in the Hawkins Hall Auditorium on the Troy Campus. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, presented the award to Stewart, who was nominated by Sohail Agboatwala, associate vice chancellor of student financial services.

The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented quarterly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the University's athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $1,000 stipend.

In a letter of nomination, Agboatwala praised Stewart for her "can-do" attitude.

"Ms. Stewart takes Troy University's commitment to student services to heart and does all in her power to ensure all students, faculty and staff who come to her with a problem leave with a solution or at least guidance as to where a solution may be found," Agboatwala said. "In my six years as her supervisor, Ms. Stewart has never shied from a task that presented itself. On several occasions, she has presented ideas for improving processes that have been adopted by those with whom she works."

Stewart was surprised and honored to receive the award.

"This was quite a surprise," she said following the presentation. "There are a lot of hard workers at Troy University and I am extremely honored to be counted among those who have received this prestigious award."
