TROY – One of the authors of the internationally known "Economic Freedom of the World" annual report will lecture to Troy University students and the public on Oct. 27.

Sponsored by the Manuel H. Johnson Center for Political Economy, Dr. Robert A. Lawson's report provides an economic freedom index for more than 140 countries, and in its most recent report, ranks the United States at 10th overall.

"Economic freedom in the United States is on the wane…Over the past decade, the rating of the United States has fallen almost a full point on the economic freedom scale," Lawson said. "Prior research indicates that a decline of this magnitude will reduce a country's long-term growth rate by at least a full percentage point."

The Jerome M. Fullinwider Chair in Economic Freedom in the O'Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom at the Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business, Dr. Lawson earned a doctorate in economics from Florida State University, where he also completed a master's in the field. He completed his undergraduate degree in economics at Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College.

Prior to joining the O'Neil Center, he held numerous positions at Auburn University and Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He is the author of numerous professional publications and the past president of the Association of Private Enterprise Education. He is a regular blogger at the widely read Division of Labour blog.

The lecture will take place at 6 p.m. in room 129 of Bibb Graves Hall. It is free to attend.
