TROY — Troy University's Department of Theatre and Dance will present a fun-filled tribute to marching bands and misfits everywhere with the musical "Band Geeks!" premiering March 29 at the Troy Campus.
The story follows the misadventures of the Belleview High Marching Beavers. With just a few members and dwindling funds, the band is close to extinction. When a troubled athlete is relegated to their ranks, tuba-playing band captain Elliott and his best friend Laura must find a way to unite the band, embrace their inner geek and save the Marching Beavers.
Performances are set for the Claudia Crosby Theatre on the Troy Campus March 29, 30, and 31, at 7:30 p.m. The show goes on the road to perform at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts at the Montgomery Campus on April 20, at 7 p.m. and at the historic Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham on May 11 and 12 at 7:30pm.

"Band Geeks!" features music by Mark Allen, Gaby Alter and Troy University alumnus Tommy Newman, and lyrics by Alter and Newman. The book is by Newman and Gordon Greenberg, who directed the original production for Goodspeed Musicals, based on a concept by Newman.
"'Band Geeks!' is a tribute to marching bands everywhere and to all of the music educators who have touched my life," Newman said. "My involvement with the theatre and music programs at TROY inspired me to be the artist I am today, and I am so grateful to be able to share that with this University at this monumental celebration!"
The performances of "Band Geeks!" are being presented as part of TROY's yearlong 125th Birthday Celebration.
"We are excited that TROY alum and 'Band Geeks!' creator Tommy Newman is on campus and helping to develop and shape this production which will be a major part of the TROY 125th Birthday Celebration," said Adena Moree, Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. "I look forward to sharing this wonderful musical theatre production with the state of Alabama as "Band Geeks!" travels to both Montgomery and Birmingham for performances after the run in Troy."
The production is under the direction of Assistant Professor Roy Hudson, Head of Musical Theatre and Theatre Education and the 2009 Alabama Teacher of the Year. Musical direction is by Newman and choreography is by Colin Cahill.
The creative team also includes set designer Robert McCrae, costume designer Elisa Biershenk, lighting designer Chris Rich, and conductor Ray Smith. Graphics are by Ed Noriega.
