TROY - Benjamin Crump, the attorney for the family of Trayvon Martin, will speak at Troy University on Feb. 18. The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Trojan Center Ballrooms on the Troy Campus.

The event, "The Pursuit of Justice: Through the Eyes of Attorney Benjamin Crump," is sponsored by the University's African American Alliance, the NAACP chapter, 101 Elite Men and the M.I.S.S. Elite Society.

Crump is a partner in the Tallahassee, Fla.-based law firm Parks & Crump, LLC. Through the years, he has represented victims and their families in a number of high-profile civil rights or racial justice cases, including the Martin case.

Martin, a 17-year-old African-American youth, was fatally shot by George Zimmerman on the night of Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch coordinator for the gated community where Martin was temporarily staying, was acquitted of charges related to the incident last summer.

The case generated much discussion about racial justice in the United States and stirred debate over the State of Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law," which gives individuals the right to use deadly force to defend themselves without any requirement to evade or retreat from a dangerous situation.

Crump received his criminal justice degree from Florida State University in 1992 and his Juris Doctor in 1995.
