University mourns death of former alumni president Gardner

TROY - James C. "Jimmy" Gardner, a 1975 alumnus and past president of the Troy University Alumni Association, passed away on May 28 following a battle with cancer. He was 65.

Gardner owned Jimmy Gardner State Farm Insurance and has been a State Farm agent for more than 30 years. In addition he coached high school football for 41 years, earning him recognition in the Fort Dale Academy Athletic Hall of Fame and the Alabama Independent Schools Association Sports Hall of Fame.

He was co-founder of the Butler County TROY Alumni Chapter in 1999, and is a Lifetime Member of the TROY Alumni Association, a member of the Trojan Warriors and the Troy University Shield Society.

In 2012, Gardner was named Alumni of the Year, an honor his wife Wanda achieved in 2000.

"Troy University has lost a true Trojan," said Faith Ward, director of alumni affairs. "Jimmy was a proud alumnus and he demonstrated that, not only in his service and commitment to the University but also within his community."

Gardner is survived by his mother, Rilla Till Gardner; his wife, Wanda; his brother, Ronnie Gardner (Paula); his sister, Fleta Richard (the late Pat Richard); his three children, Dr. Josh Gardner (Hilarie), Dr. Caleb Gardner (Sarah Ellen), Abbie Ballew (Brad); two step-daughters, Melanie Garner (Wes), and Lauran Lott (Frankie); three nephews, Frank Richard, Joseph Gardner and Dow Gardner, one niece, Hannah Coody; and 12 grandchildren.
