Outreach to the community always is a key part of Troy University's mission, and those efforts are especially evident during the holiday season. TROY students, faculty, staff and alumni have been busy this holiday season taking part in various outreach projects.

On Dec. 15, Troy University staff and members of the Montgomery Metro Alumni Chapter took a turn supporting the Salvation Army, ringing the bells as a part of the organization's Red Kettle Campaign at the Chantilly Boulevard Walmart in Montgomery.

"Our alumni stepped up and demonstrated the Trojan Spirit through supporting the Salvation Army in this effort," said Faith Ward, Director of Alumni Affairs. "We had tremendous support throughout the day and our staff and alumni involved in the effort enjoyed the opportunity to lend a hand in this annual campaign."

Faculty and staff on the Dothan and Montgomery campuses helped area children through the Toys for Tots campaigns.

Faculty and staff at the Dothan Campus collected about 160 toys for the Wiregrass area Toys for Tots Campaign. Staff members presented the toys to Toys for Tots representatives on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

On the Troy Campuses, students got into the mix as well, holding toy drives in the final weeks of the semester that added to those donated by faculty and staff who attended the annual Christmas lunch on Dec. 17. Sodexo played an important role in the effort as well, allowing for the Toy for Tickets, in which faculty and staff could exchange toys for tickets to the Christmas luncheon. More than 700 toys were collected through the Troy Campus efforts and presented to the Toys for Tots representatives during the Dec. 17 event.

TROY athletics also aided the Toys for Tots campaign by hosting a Toy for Tickets exchange at the last home football game of the season. Fans were allowed to exchange a toy for a general admission ticket to the game.

In addition, Trojan student-athletes took part in a canned food drive in November, an effort they have been participating in for 10 years.

Student-athletes donated approximately 2,000 canned goods to the Troy Human Resources Food Bank for use by residents of the Troy community during the holiday season.

"We tell our student-athletes all the time that it's better to give than to receive," Troy University Sports Hall of Fame member and athletic training professor Doc Anderson said. "This is the 10th year we have done this, and it is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to give back to their community."

Each team was charged with a goal of four cans of food per student-athlete and that goal was met and surpassed.

Faculty, staff and students at the Phenix City Campus donated 230 toys during the campus's annual toy drive in December. The toys were donated to children who live in the Phenix City Housing Authority's Riverview community.

The Montgomery Campus supported the Salvation Army's stocking drive, and filled about 200 stockings with toys and gifts which will be given to area children and families in need.

These efforts provide just a glimpse of the many activities in which Troy University students, faculty, staff and alumni participate during the holidays and throughout the year.
