TROY - More than 2,000 middle school and high school band members representing 26 bands will perform alongside the Sound of the South Marching Band during Troy University's Band and Spirit Day on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The bands will join the Sound in a special halftime performance during TROY's opening home game against Charleston Southern. Kickoff for the game is set for 6 p.m. For tickets, call 1-877-878-9467. On game day, the ticket office in Tine Davis Fieldhouse will be open from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. General admission tickets for Saturday's game are $15.
"Band Day" began in 1998 and provides high school band students the opportunity to experience performing at the collegiate level.
"This event brings a large number of students to campus who may otherwise not have a chance to visit TROY," said Dr. Adam Blackstock, TROY's assistant director of bands and associate professor in the John M. Long School of Music. "This is an invaluable recruiting tool that has been in place for many years and it as a large impact on the university and surrounding community."
Participating bands, from schools in Alabama, Georgia and Florida, will assemble at 10 a.m. on the intramural field near Trojan Arena for a practice with the Sound, and participate in the Trojan Victory Parade up University Avenue to Tailgate Terrace from the Quad at 2:30 p.m.
Band members are not the only ones participating in the special day. About 125 cheerleaders from elementary through community college levels will participate in a Troy Trojans Cheer Team clinic from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in Sartain Hall, and will perform during the game between the first and second quarters. Registration for the clinic is still available through the troytrojans.com website in the Fan Zone section.
Other special activities on Saturday include the traditional "Freshman Run," scheduled pre-game prior to both teams taking the field; a special tribute to Dr. R. Douglas Hawkins, the University's longest-serving trustee who died on Sept. 5, during the Sound's pre-game show; a half time tribute to Corey McCullers, a Trojan football player killed in a wreck this summer; and Trojan Walk, scheduled for 3:45 p.m. on Tailgate Terrace.
A 2 p.m. campus tour conducted by the Admissions Department is available for prospective students and their parents.
