Student Health Services
Currently enrolled students are eligible for services. Student dependents, chronic conditions or long-term illness cannot be cared for at the student health center.
Outpatient Clinic
General assessments are provided on a walk-in basis by the registered nurse on duty.
Certified nurse practitioner clinic
Appointments for the nurse practitioner are referred through the RN on duty. Assessments
of medical problems, physical exams and prescriptions with the exception of narcotics
or other controlled medications are handled by the nurse practitioner. She collaborates
with the university physician and makes referrals as needed.
Physician Clinic
The consulting physician makes daily visits to campus for an hour. The nurse or nurse
practitioner makes appointments after completing an assessment of the student.
Immunization Clinic
Vaccines are available for MMR, tetanus, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Menomune. TB
skin testing is also available. Gardasil is also now available. Gardasil is the new
vaccine to prevent HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). HPV can cause cervical cancer and
genital warts. Gardasil requires three doses. The price of Gardasil is $155 per shot.
Check with your insurance company for coverage.
Medical clearance for registration
All students are required to complete a medical history form and include verified
immunization dates before registering for any classes. All medical records are confidential
and may only be released by written request of the student.
Health Education
Health education is offered at each visit on an individual basis. Amy Allen is available
for peer education programs to address current health issues and can be reached through
Student Health Services. The health center has brochures and pamphlets available in
a wide variety of topics pertinent to college life, such as migraines, allergies and
vaccines.
Laboratory Services
The Health Center offers some in house tests including strep throat tests, mononucleosis
tests and urinalyses. The Health Center contracts other tests out to LabCorp, and
results are received within one to four days. A student’s personal physician may also
order tests through the health center if needed. A prescription with complete orders
and appropriate diagnoses is required.
Referral Services
The Health Center provides referral information to any local agencies, for dental
and eye care or for specialty care. Many special needs may be referred to Montgomery
or Dothan. Mental health counseling is also available through the SAVE Project.
