Through TROY's Alternative-A option, you'll complete an internship and gain the classroom experience needed to teach English language arts in middle and high schools. As you work toward initial English teacher certification, you'll build expertise in English and literature. Designed for individuals with a bachelor's degree who aren't yet certified to teach, this program develops advanced instructional skills in English and literature while meeting the requirements for Class A certification in Alabama. You'll earn your credentials, prepare for the Praxis exam and gain the knowledge and experience to teach students in grades 6–12.

Dr. Theresa Johnson is an associate professor of English and serves as the supervisor for ELA and graduate Alt-A interns. She teaches world literature, theory and practice of composition, sociolinguistics and more. She also serves as the advisor for English language arts majors and TESOL minors.

Dr. Joseph Johnson is the chair of the Teacher Education Department at TROY. Dr. Johnson is TROY's leader for edTPA preparation and has more than 13 years of experience teaching in secondary schools and 13 more in higher education. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and teaches undergraduate and graduate student teaching seminars.
