Student Organizations and Enrichment

Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society

At TROY, we have a chapter of the National Mathematics Honor Society known as Pi Mu Epsilon.  We are known as the Alabama Eta chapter, and we were chartered in 2004.  We are one of only 7 universities in the state of Alabama that have such a chapter, and are very active in participation in regional and national mathematics student conferences (such as MAA MathFest).  In fact, we were one of 6 chapter finalists for the Poiani Infiinity Award "that promote scholarship in mathematics through extraordinary creative programs integrated with the encouragement of student participation in local and national opportunities to advance their knowledge and communication of mathematics."

To become a member is one of the highest honors a mathematics student can receive, as it is based primarily upon your academic performance in mathematics courses.  Therefore,  it really stands out on a resume to graduate school committees and employers.  Moreover, several of our members have taken advantage of the opportunities to have paid travel expenses to the MAA MathFest for Pi Mu Epsilon and the Mathematical Association of America.  This is a great learning and networking opportunity for students to meet other students across the U.S. as well as other mathematics faculty.

Mathematics Club

The Department of Mathematics has great student involvement activities outside of the classroom, many of which are sponsored by our Square Root of C Mathematics Club.  This is open to any student at TROY who is interested in Mathematics, and is a great way to get involved and network with other students.  We host many events each year, which help students in their professional and academic development, and help promote interest in mathematics.  Our activities include

  • Seminars given by students and by faculty members
  • Math Movie Night and Game Night
  • Sudoku and mathematics competitions & math bingo
  • Tailgating tent for students, faculty, and their families
  • Workshops on graduate schools, internship opportunities, and mathematical typesetting.

Mini-Workshop on Matrix Analysis and Applications

This meeting aims to foster research and collaboration among mathematicians working in various aspects of linear and multilinear algebra, matrix analysis, quantum information, and quantum computing. The inaugural meeting, held at the University of North Florida, led to several research publications by its participants. We aspire to establish this gathering as a regular tradition for researchers with shared interests in matrix analysis and quantum information.
“I would tell anyone interested in studying math at TROY to do it! The faculty are excellent and are willing to help. I would also tell them that if it is something they want to do, they will get through it. Chase your dreams now while you can pursue it.”
