Professor of Military Science
Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Fancey is a native of Rockville, Maryland. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in May 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry.His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Military Intelligence Captains Career Course, the Command and General Staff College, and the Joint and Combined Warfighting School. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Management from University of Maryland, Global Campus, in 2023.
After graduating the Infantry Officer Basic Course in 2008, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader and Battalion Intelligence Officer. In 2011, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as the Military Intelligence Detachment Commander and Battalion S-2. In March 2015, he took command of the US Army Recruiting Company in Charleston, South Carolina.
In 2017, his next assignment was (Special Operations) in Fort Bragg North Carolina. LTC Fancey returned to Fort Bragg in 2017, where he served as the Assistant Brigade S-2, 95th Civil Affiars Brigade (Airborne), until 2018. He then served as the Division Intelligence Planner and as the S-2 of 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. He relocated to Miami, FL in 2021, where he served as Intelligence Planner, Cyber Operations Division and then as the Executive Officer to the Director of Operations at United States Southern Command. His most recent assignment was to Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as the Deputy Corps G-2 and then as the Analysis and Control Element Chief for III Armored Corps.Lieutenant Colonel Fancey has deployed four times in support of the Global War on Terror: three times to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and once to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. His wife, Mackenzie, is a Behavioral Health Specialist in the US Army Reserve and a student at University of Maryland, Global Campus.
His awards and decorations include two Bronze Stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, five Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, seven Army Achievement Medals, the NATO Medal (International Security Assistance Forces Afghanistan), three Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medals, the Army Recruiting Ribbon, two Joint Meritorious Unit Awards, the Valorous Unit Award, two Meritorious Unit Awards, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Combat Action Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge and the Silver Army Recruiter Badge. His foreign awards and badges include the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge in Gold; Parachutist Badges from Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Latvia; and Luxembourg International March of Diekirch Medal. He is a recipient of the Military Intelligence Association's Knowlton Award.
