An M.S. in Education with Real-World Experiences

At TROY, you'll have numerous opportunities to put educational theory into practice. Under the mentorship and guidance of supportive faculty, you'll engage in hands-on learning experiences in your classes and practicum. This focus on practical experiences sharpens your skills in the classroom and readies you to teach in more dynamic settings. If you don't already hold licensure, you'll also be eligible for Class B teacher certification after you graduate.

Dr. Shannon M. Dadd

Dr. Shannon M. Dadd is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at TROY. She teaches educational technology, science and STEM to all education majors. She serves as the department's Field Experience Coordinator, helping connect each education major to a mentor teacher in partnership schools. Additionally, Dr. Dadd serves as chairperson on the Board of Directors for Alabama STEM Education.

M.S. Ed. Visual Arts (Traditional or Alternative-A)

Help students find their artistic voice and contribute to arts culture by focusing your M.S. Ed. degree in visual arts. At TROY, you'll continue to refine your artistic talent while learning how to engage, impart knowledge and teach visual art techniques to your future students. 


The traditional track is designed for current educators, while the Alternative-A track includes additional requirements for students with a bachelor's outside of education. Choose the traditional track if you already teach in grades P-12 or the Alternative-A option for teaching internship opportunities in the visual arts.

M.S. Ed. Music, Instrumental (Traditional or Alternative-A)

Learn how to help your students grow their talents in brass, woodwind, percussion and string instruments. In this specialization, you'll develop as a musician and an educator, learning from talented and experienced musicians dedicated to helping you succeed. You'll have the opportunity to gain practical experience in the classroom and in one of TROY's bands or ensembles. 


The traditional track is designed for current educators, while the Alternative-A track includes additional requirements for students with a bachelor's outside of education. What is an M.S. Ed.?
An M.S. Ed., or Master of Science in Education, is an advanced academic degree focused on developing knowledge and skills in a facet of education. TROY's Master of Science in Education focuses on interdisciplinary education in grades P-12, providing you with skills for educational leadership and engaging learners of various age groups. You'll also build expertise in one of four content areas: visual arts, choral music, instrumental music or physical education. The program includes coursework in educational theory, instructional strategies, educational technologies, curriculum development and research. 
What can you do with a master's in education?
A master's degree in education creates opportunities for classroom teaching, departmental leadership, instructional coaching, curriculum development and more. Specific master's in education job opportunities include preschool teacher, elementary school teacher, secondary school teacher, instructional coach, instructional coordinator, instructional technology specialist and program manager. You may also qualify for jobs in policy analysis or research. 
Do you need a master's to teach?
For many states and districts, having a master's degree is not required to become a teacher. The minimum educational requirement to teach at the K-12 level in most areas is a bachelor's degree. However, an M.S. degree in education can create numerous career advancement opportunities as a classroom teacher or educational leader.
